FAST FIVE: Smart, funny, helpful, and interesting links

Part-Time Advertising-Industry Web-Developer Recruitment Brisbane, Creative-Agency Marketing-Communication Recruitment, Designer Roles Hobart

Wahey, it's time for our favourite weekly tradition around these parts i.e. collecting some of the best stories and links the internet has to offer, stamping them with the words 'FAST FIVE', and humbly offering them up to you, our virtual pal. This week we look at the simple graphic design change that could've saved the Oscars producers a LOT of grief when Best Picture was handed out, examine some techniques the BBC uses to build websites that scale, and check out a super cute 1950s trailer that's for sale in Palm Springs... and more!

THIS SIMPLE DESIGN CHANGE WOULD HAVE SAVED THE OSCARS

So EVERYONE has been talking about the infamous mix up at this year’s Oscars, and if you’ve been following the topic on social media you’d know by now that right now there is a seemingly endless sea of hot takes being published online. But here’s an interesting little perspective you may not have come across yet - how some great graphic design might’ve saved the producers of the Academy Awards a lot of heartache.

THE CASE FOR GOING TO BED AT 2:30AM

Finally, an article that completely vindicates our lifestyle choice to stay up until the wee hours binge watching episodes of Fringe! OK, OK, so that's not QUITE what this article is about. Instead, it's a tribute to the benefits of starting your work late at night and embracing your night owl behaviour (or as it is known in the world of science, 'delayed sleep phase disorder'). Anyway, it's a pretty interesting feature talking about the troubles that night owls often face in the workplace, and what you can do about it.

HOW THE BBC BUILDS WEBSITES THAT SCALE

One for the web developers - a list of the techniques used by the BBC to create sites and apps that can handle MILLIONS of users at the same time. From caches to CDNs to good ol' compromise, there are a nice collection of insights contained within this piece.

DARLING '50S TRAILER HOME IN PALM SPRINGS CAN BE YOURS FOR $55K

If your preferred home decorating style is 'retro' then you might find some serious inspiration when you look at pictures of this 1950s trailer home in Palm Springs - and hey, if you've got US $55,000, why not buy a plane ticket to southern California and purchase the trailer for yourself? These photos make the vintage trailer look pretty damn cute, it must be said.  www.curbed.com/2017/2/27/14751856/palm-springs-safari-park-1950s-vintage-trailer-mobile-home-for-sale

SPORTS, SPACE, TECH, AND THE LONG GAME

Here’s a fantastic use of Twitter’s Moments feature, a perfectly told story about how a little known American law called Title IX which required universities to fund women & men’s sports equally, how that led to a top female student getting a scholarship to Stanford and eventually joining NASA, and how that scientists later foresight in putting photo slides taken in space online for the public to access eventually helped convince the Brazilian government that logging in the Amazon was having disastrous effects on the environment. *takes a deep breath* We realise that sounds like a lot to take in - but take it in you will when you check out this amazing story on Twitter. Thanks for sharing, @sarahmei!
